School zones, crosswalks and railroad crossings are areas where it is very important for your teen to be fully aware of their surroundings. Make sure you point out these situations when you are driving with your teen.
School Zones
Speed limits are lower in school zones. Drivers must be alert at all times for children and pedestrians to suddenly step into the roadway. Make sure your teen recognizes and follows the signs or flashing lights that warn drivers that they are approaching a school or school crossing.
Crosswalks
Crosswalks can be easily missed if your teen is not paying close enough attention. Teach your teen to watch for crosswalks and to look ahead to make sure pedestrians are not crossing. Before turning at a crosswalk, drivers should stop, let all pedestrians cross and then turn into the nearest lane. State laws in several states actually require drivers to stop and allow all pedestrians in a crosswalk to cross. Make sure you and your teen are familiar with the laws in your state.
Railroad Crossings
Railroad crossings can be very dangerous. Teach your teen the following technique when approaching a crossing:
- Slow down, whether the lights are blinking or not, and check the rearview mirror for traffic behind you.
- LOOK and LISTEN for oncoming trains.
- Determine the number of tracks and check EACH track in both directions.
