Talking to teens can be a challenge. And it can be easy for you and your teen to get your wires crossed. So how can you make the most of your time spent talking about smart driving? Start by being an active listener.

Be An Active Listener

Active listening means concentrating on what your teen is really saying instead of planning your next response. By showing that you're interested in what your teen has to say, you can keep the channel open and reinforce the connection. Try this exercise:

Next time you and your teen talk, use affirmative responses when you react to the way they describe their thoughts or feelings. Affirmative statements may include: "It sounds like this is really bothering you," or "I can see why that might be difficult." It doesn't mean you must always agree with your teen's perspective. But it does show them that you're validating their feelings. As you build a rapport through active listening, you'll have a foundation for positive and meaningful conversations about smart driving.
