Bicycles On the Road

Depending upon where you live, you may see a lot of bicyclists on the road. Here are some tips for sharing the road with bike riders.

Watch Your Speed

Speeding is a factor in a high number of crashes involving bicyclists. It's always a good idea to drive within the speed limit.

Are You Too Close?

Be aware of how wide your car is when passing a bicyclist. And try not to pass too closely.

Know When You Can Use Bike Lanes

You can move your car into a bike lane to make a right turn if it is not occupied. If the bike lane is being used by a bicyclist, don't use it. It's illegal and may block a bike rider's path.

Judging a Bicyclist's Speed

Bicyclists can travel at high speeds — often as fast as other traffic. Don't assume there is more time to turn in front of a bicycle than in front of a car. Also remember that bicyclists cannot brake and stop as fast as the driver of a car.
